Packs of note cards (4”x 5 ½”) contain eight cards/eight envelopes—two scenes of Queen City Station, Western Maryland Station, LaVale Toll House, George Washington’s Headquarters. Cards have site histories and are suitable for framing.

Cumberland, Maryland – George Washington’s Headquarters---

George Washington’s Headquarters is located in Riverside Park on Green Street in Cumberland, Maryland. General George Washington began and ended his military career here at Fort Cumberland. Washington’s career began in 1755 as an aid-de-camp to General Braddock. During the French and Indian War he used this cabin as his official headquarters. Following the Whiskey Rebellion, his military career ended here in 1794 when he reviewed American troops in full uniform for the last time.The cabin is the only remaining structure of Fort Cumberland.

Cumberland, Maryland - Western Maryland Station 1913---

The Western Maryland Railway Station was completed in 1913 at the peak of the American railroad power and is currently on the National Register of Historic Places. The line was noted for its shiny, clean engines and first rate passenger service. The station is a surviving monument to the most memorable, high-styled passenger and freight line that operated in the state. The building’s monumental scale and commanding exterior attest to both the success of the Western Maryland Railroad and the importance of railroading to Cumberland’s growth.

LaVale, Maryland - Toll House 1855, National Road---

The Toll House in LaVale, Maryland was built in 1833 and is located on U.S. Route 40, the Old National Road. It was the first toll house constructed and the only one remaining in the state. The National Pike was the first road to be constructed in the USA with federal funds. The tolls collected were used to maintain and repair the road and pay the toll collectors through the 1890’s. The toll house, a four room structure, housed the gate keeper who collected the tolls.

Cumberland, Maryland - Queen City Station (B&Oº 1871---

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) built the Queen City Hotel and depot in 1871. It served the public for over a century in grand fashion reflective of rail travel in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Nothing like it is in existence in the country today. Passengers waited for trains in splendor and comfort in elegant rooms, on covered porches, or in landscaped gardens. After standing 100 years, the B&O depot-hotel was demolished in 1971 to make way for the Cumberland Post Office.
