Cumberland, Maryland – St. Paul’s English Lutheran Church, Baltimore Street---

The Lutheran congregation organized and built a log church in 1794 on lot number 240 at the northeast corner of Bedford (Baltimore) and Mill (Centre) Streets. The first church was called the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation of Cumberland and their church book was written in German. Between 1836-1843 German immigrants began attending church and to accommodate, a second building of brick was built in 1844. The third and final building was erected in 1894 and dedicated in September 1895. At this time the congregation voted to change the name of the church from Christ’s Lutheran Congregation to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. In the early 1950s the congregation realized the church could not remain on this site and continue to grow. Local gossip relates the story that Mr. Roman left his property on Washington Street to the Lutheran church out of spite. The Catholic church on Fayette Street, which had not been on friendly terms with him throughout the years, wanted to purchase the land to expand their church. Since the Lutheran church had been willed the Roman property, a new building was constructed in l958 leaving this building to be sold and razed.
